The following involves using the Windows XP Recovery Console. Check here is
you need help understanding how to use the Recovery Console
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q307654
To replace damaged ntldr and ntdetect.com you can copy fresh files from the
XP CD using the COPY command. Boot with the XP CD and enter the Recovery
Console (as above). At the Command Prompt type the following (where "X" is
your CD-Rom drive letter) allowing the files to overwrite the old files
COPY X:\i386\NTLDR C:
COPY X:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C:

The simplest cause of this error message is a floppy disk in the drive
when your BIOS is set to boot floppy before hard disk.
The second simplest cause is due to changing the boot device in the BIOS
from the drive with the boot loader on it to another drive that hasn't
been setup to boot XP.
The third simplest cause is a missing or corrupted file on the correct
boot drive and active partition. Harry's got the directions to cover
that case. Since no one ever posts back whether this advice is
successful, we can't know how often this is the true cause of the
problem. Most corruption happens to registry hives due to fast shutdown
and disk write caching problems with some OEM vendors. However, there
has been an increase in "NTLDR missing" posts lately, so there may be a
new problem, but as I said, since people take advice and never give
feedback, it's hard to say.
The fourth simplest cause is you installed a third-party boot manager
and didn't quite get it right. The solution is to read the user manual
and try again.
