I have a machine with a XP installed that says I have 15
days left to register. I just purchased XP home and I
want to install XP and wipe the hard drive clean. How do
I do this?

Hi Marty,

Boot the WinXP CD, start a new installation, opt to format the drive as =
part of the operation. You will need your Product Key for this, and you =
will need to activate the new installation after setup completes.

Insert the CD in the hard drive and boot the CD. Usually, there is a
separate key press you can do in the BIOS screen that will let you
change the boot device temporarily. If not, enter the BIOS setup and
change the order of boot to allow the CD to boot before the hard disk.
Note that you may have a limited time to press the ANY key to allow the
CD to boot, so keep an eye on the screen.

Then when the CD finishes booting select "install" and then when it asks
if you want to install or repair the current installation select
"install" again and follow the directions to wipe your partition and
create a new one.

You will have xx days to "activate" your new retail install. You never
have to "register" which means provide personal information to
Microsoft.

However, if all you want to do is activate a pirated copy of XP, there
is a simpler way to do it. Just select Product Activation and click
"telephone" and then change the product key to the key that came with
your retail purchase. Then you can use the Internet to activate. If
successful, your unauthorized install will now be activated and legal.
