I am current on a Dell inspiron laptop. I upgraded from
Windows XP Home to XP pro. After the upgrade and the
installation of service pack 1 my usb ports no longer
worked. Dell support said every laptop that has upgraded
the way I have without using the CD provided by them
(which has service pack one included on it at the time of
installation) has the same problem. They are telling me
I have to reformat my computer, but I want to avoid that
at all costs. Has anyone had this similar problem, or is
there a patch out there to fix this. If anyone knows how
to fix this without a reformat I would be extremely
grateful. Thanks.

Greetings --
Since the problem is directly related to Dell's customized OEM
version of WinXP, you'll probably have to follow their advice. No one
else will be able to provide you with the specific customized drivers
that Dell's laptop requires.

I think the suggestion here has been to do into Device Manger and delete all
references to USB and then reboot and let xp reinstall the hardware usb.
Recommended to disconnect USB devices prior to doing this.
