mouse/keyboard incompatible

I just purchased XP Home and went to microsoft support to
install the software/drivers for my Intellimouse Explorer
and Microsoft Internet keyboard. I began running the XP
Home programs for BOTH of these hardware and a dialog box
came up saying something like "Incompatible Stop
Installation" I pressed stop but it kept installing
anyway, then when it rebooted my mouse froze. I did get it
going again through a complicated run through the recovery
console, why did it keep installing even when I requested
a stop? Where is the software to run these hardware on XP
if not from the exact place I got it from? I will not
always trust content from Microsoft.
