View Full Version : Updating ATI drivers

Ok, here's the deal. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000
with old drivers. I've downloaded the new drivers, but
since it's ATI they have to do things the hard way. You
can't just update the new drivers, no... You have to
first uninstall the old drivers, restart the system, then
install the new drivers. Sound simple??? HA!!! I'm
running XP Pro, and after I uninstall the video drivers I
restart the system... Here's where the fun begins, once
the system has booted, XP automatically finds new
hardware and reinstalls the old drivers. I can't seem to
interrupt this process by left or right clicking on
the "Found New Hardware" balloon. PLEASE!!! Anyone know
how to turn off XP's penchant to automatically install
hardware without at least asking me if I want it
installed?? Please help, before I pull out what's left
of my already thinning hair!!

Delete the folder named "ATI" on the root of your C drive.
That's were the old driver files are along with the WDM and Control panel
files.

If you truly uninstalled the old drivers how can XP use them??
Are you sure XP is not using its generic ATI drivers??
Are you removing the Radeon drivers thru control panel/add&remove ??

Have you tried uninstalling the old drivers and installing the new drivers
without rebooting. If not able how about going into safe mode and
installing the new drivers after uninstalling the old drivers and rebooting.
Plus did you go into device Manager and delete your Display driver or there
is a tab there that will let you update your drivers without deleting.

Your mileage may vary, but the last 4 or 5 times I have updated my ATI
drivers all I have done is run the executable downloaded from the ATI
website. The drivers updated just fine without having to uninstall
the old ones. But like I said I may have just been lucky and your
mileage may vary.

When it finds the new hardware before it installs drivers it should give
you the option to accept or cancel. If it's not doing that then you
don't have the drivers and control panel properly un-installed.
Go here http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/ pick up Driver Cleaner and
install it on your system. Then uninstall the ATI drivers 'and' ATI
control panel. Then boot into safe mode and run Driver Cleaner. Once you
have run Driver Cleaner in safe mode reboot back into normal WinXP.
At any time during this when new hardware is found just leave the system
alone until a box pops up that has a "cancel" option. Click on "cancel".
Once every thing is canceled and the system fully boots run the driver
install provided by ATI. Let the system reboot when it asks to. When the
system boots back up run the install for the control panel and let it
reboot when it asks to.
