View Full Version : Two problems: Drag-and-Drop and No Initial Mouse Response

Howdy!

Well, y'all, I've got two seperate problems with a new machine I just built
to replace a 98SE box:

Asus P4C800 Deluxe; 3.0 P4 (HT/800 MHz FSB); 2 GB 3200 DDR (4x512 MB)
2x WD 36 GB S-ATA Drives plus 2xWD 250 GB P-ATA drives (all non-RAID)
Sony DRU-500A DVD+/-R; Matrox Millennium G400 AGP
XP Pro OEM with SP1; Problems before and after installing all updates
Only drivers installed were motherboard related.

Any ideas y'all might have on these problems would be appreciated:

(1) Explorer drag-and-drop functionality is lost. I cannot drag files
between folders,
nor can I drag links between IE windows (specific situation: I
open up one IE
window with a search and drag links to a second window to examine
the results
without having to "back" or re-search.)

(2) When XP boots, I can use the mouse for maybe one or two clicks, then
I lose all
click-ability. To get it back, all I have to do is something like
Ctrl-Esc to call up the
"Start" menu and for the remainder of the session, the mouse works
like a champ.

Initially everything was great. After a period of time, the problems
surfaced. I have reinstalled
XP twice now. Each time, both problems went away initially and both returned
after
a period of time.

Other things I've tried:

(1) Using a PCI video card in place of the Matrox. No change.

(2) Memory swapping. No problem found.

(3) Underclocking. No change.

Other than this, the system seems to be running like a champ. No errors.
Looks good.

Well, I'm going to post this and keep working on the situation. If I find a
resolution,
I'll be sure to post it here.

Thanks a bunch!

Dan

I'll throw in a couple of additional thoughts.

First, the time period. All of this has been over about a 20 hour period.
When it worked, it wasn't for long.

Next, and probably quite important. I just (out of habit) tried to drag a
link
to another open IE window and noticed that IE is *trying* and has the
"shortcut" arrow with the mouse cursor when it reaches the desktop (valid)
or the body of the second window (also valid.)

Furthermore, if I attempt to drop at an illegal point (such as the toolbar),
I get the "slashed circle" cursor. This tells me that IE itself is trying to
do
the job and is still executing callbacks.

Also, I have verified that I have no errors in the event logs and nothing
in the device manager seems amiss.

Thanks

Dan

Sorry if these things are obvious and you've already checked them.

Several settings for drag and drop:
--Right click Taskbar and choose Properties. Start Menu> Advanced, place
check in box to Enable Drag and Drop.

--In Internet Options> Security: A drag and drop setting about halfway down
the page of options.

--Several settings in Group Policy as well (start> Run> gpedit.msc). Browse
through the Administrative Templates for both computer and user to find
them.

For the mouse... using extra mouse software? If yes, try uninstalling it and
using the plain drivers in XP instead.

Sharon, thanks for your reply.

Yes, I have verified these instances, however, these seem to be quite
specific. My gut feeling is that people with general Explorer drag-and-drop
problems are more OLE-related.

I've pretty much concluded that Explorer / IE is trying to pass the URL /
path / filename, but it isn't making it to the destination, whether the
desktop, start menus, tool bars, other IE windows or even other apps.

Copy, Cut and Paste do work

Oh, on the mouse driver, I'm not using anything special. I'm very much a
minimalist and don't need totally bleeding-edge gear.

Anyhow, I'm searching the 'Net right now. It seems that quite a few people
share my problems, even dating back to Win95. They all suggest reloading
Windows and for many, that seems to resolve the problem. Other common
solutions were by reinstalling DCOM and others solved their problem by
uninstalling and reinstalling IE5. So, I think I'm going to try that now...
It's just a quick download....

Be back later...

Dan

Dan, in Win9x/ME the problem often was OLE related. A rare occurence in XP
with its file protection. In XP the reason is more often permission and
policy related. You could still run SFC if you want though. That will
replace missing and damaged files for you.

Also, you may want to take a look in Event Viewer to see if it has any
additional information about these failed operations.

Browser add-ins and spyware can cause weird side effects. Try disabling any
add-ins and check the system for spyware.

PS: IE5.5 should not be installed in XP, it uses IE6 and IE6 SP1. The
Internet Explorer download page on the MS site now has an IE6 SP1 download
for XP. This is something we've not had for XP for quite a while and it's a
welcome arrival.
