I'm trying to get an old 640x480 monitor to work with win
XP for a friend (I installed XP on his sysytem using my
newer monitor, unfortunately). Previous versions of
windows allowed for the monitor to be changed to a
standard 640x480 monitor, does this option still exist in
XP? I can't seem to get it working at all (the display
works fine in safe mode), and I con't lower the
resolutino below 600x800, which causes problems. Any
insights?

The minimum hardware requirements for Windows XP
specify having a Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher resolution
video adapter and monitor. It's time to consider upgrading
to a new monitor.
You might try this:
Right-click on your desktop and select:
Properties > Settings > Advanced > Adapter > List All Modes
--=20

XP does not like to go into 640x480 mode by default. You might try and manually
select the 640x480 monitor from the list of "(Standard monitor types)".
Start->Run->Display->Settings tab->Advanced->Monitor tab->Driver tab->Update
Driver-"Install from a list or specific location"->"Don't search, I will choose
the driver to install"->Uncheck "Show compatible hardware"->Choose Standard VGA
640x480 monitor from the list.

Junk the silly thing. People are giving away monitor in the 14 to 15 inch
range and they can be bought for 5 to 10. Why screw around with a plain vga
monitor that will not even support svga 800 x 600. Beside this what kind of
computer does he have that you are installing xp on that he is using a
monitor so old. This whole thing does not make sense when the operating
system cost3 times what you could buy a 17 inch monitor. Time for a reality
check.
