View Full Version : XP drops network connections

We run XP on a very small office network. We have a file
and print server that is running 2000 Server. On a very
regular basis the xp machines loose the connections to
printers and mapped drives. The other PC's on the
workgroup cannot be seen. The only way to get the
connections back is by typing the destination address in
at the command prompt. Can anyone help in resolving this
problem please.

Matt,
Try the following - at one of the affected XP computers add your W2K server
and IP address to the hosts file located
in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. There should be an example
record in there for you to follow. In case there isn't, here is an
example. Let's say you have a server called MATT with an IP address of
10.0.0.1 there should be a record like this in there:
MATT 10.0.0.1
Then, reboot that machine and see if it loses the connection to the network.
If it works, you should be able to make the same change for each machine.
Of course, if you ever change the IP address of the server, you'll have to
update each machine. Oh yeah....if this works and you want to know the
details of the problem, I'll tell you then.
Good luck,
Mike
