You Connect to the Windows Update Web Site
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=3Dkb;en-us;817144

Go to Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter.

If "Version 5.1 (Build 2600) is not shown, you are running a
beta version of XP for which there is no update support. If
that's the case, you need to reformat your drive and install
the released version of XP, after purchasing it.

when connecting the first time, did you receive a security dialog asking if
you want to install "...windows update...activex..."? if so, did you click
"no"? if you clicked yes and did install the windows update activex
extension and it still does not work, first try rebooting. if it still does
not work, do you use any security software on your machine that would
prevent windows update from working? if so, try disabling this software.
also, try setting automatic updates to check for windows updates; when one
is found, choose to install it, then reboot as prompted, then try connecting
to the windows update site again and see if it works. also, you may want to
check the 'security' tab in internet explorer to make sure that the safe
activex settings are enabled or at least set to 'prompt'.

Lynn,

Can you just confirm if you are running a Retail or OEM (came with the PC)
copy of Windows XP.
And you did do the install and activation yourself from real Retail or OEM
CDs
