I'm Installing a new Hard drive and I want to copy all to
new drive. I know that there is no gost that will work
with XP, so can I install XP and backup programs data and
settings from old drive and then restore all the
data, pograms and settings to new drive with out installing
all programs one at the time??

I have Ghost 2003 and can't get it to work on my XP-Pro system. The program
documentation says it is compatible however. Maybe you'll have better luck
than me :) I'd like to know what alternatives to Ghost exist. I know
PowerQuest makes Drive Image which I believe does essentially the same thing
as Ghost. What else is out there?

JCH,
Are you simply allowing Ghost to copy the image using default settings? If so
you might try to make an image using the Image Disk or Image Boot options. This
will do a sector to sector copy plus copy the Boot sector and/or track 0.
I had problems using Ghost2002 with Win2000. It would copy all the data over
but when I would be and try to log on, it would immediately log me back off.
Drive Image 2002 worked perfectly for me. It also reproportioned the hard drive
partitions to make everything fit appropriately.
I now have Ghost2003 and it backs up all my data, but I have not had to restore
it yet. If I get a chance sometime, I will try and see if it restores to a
spare drive just to see if I have a viable backup.

I don't know if ghost works the same way with win2000 but when I create an
image of my xp partition it asks for a unique serial number that I have to
enter everytime I restore the image if I enter it wrong or don't enter it it
just boots me out. Just a thought, you might want to try it.

I can't even get that far Paul. Attempting to run Ghost from Windows gets
terminated with a GhostStartError.txt message.

You have to run ghost from a startup disk at least you do with 2002, check
under help for creating a ghost startup disk.
