reset ip address on broadband

hi all,
i am running windows xp and i have a broadband
modem conected through a nic card on my computer. What i
want to know is how i can reset my ip address incase of
hackers getting in or something similar ive tried it but
its nothing like dialup so its not working

any help would be apreciated fbwasup @ hotmail com

At a command prompt type choose option one ok
1. ipconfig /release
2. ipconfig /renew

You can try Al's trick but if your intent is to get a different IP, it might
not work because of the broadband modem.

My Broadband provider does not change IP addresses even though they use DHCP to
assign addresses. If your provider is like mine, then the /release/renew will
yield the same IP address.

As an alternative, why not install ZoneAlarm or Norton Firewall or the other
popular firewall (the name escape me though). This way you can block incoming
and out going programs from accessing the Internet (at least some of these
firewalls will do it both ways). You can also try and use XP's built in
firewall, but it only blocks incoming attacks and not outgoing data (in case you
somehow do pick up a Trojan).

If you have the money, you can also purchase a broadband router and put it
between your computer and the modem. The router uses something refered to as
NAT (Network Address Translation) to assign your computer a private IP address
that cannot be forwarded through Internet routers. You make the router your
default gateway and when your computer wants access to the Internet, the router
converts the private IP address to the public IP address Southwest Bell gives
you. The routers also act as a hardware firewall to keep direct attacks to your
computer to a minium.
