I was planning on formatting my hard drive the other day
when I realized I had thrown out the case for my Windows
XP CD which has the CD key on it. Is there some way I can
still get the CD key for my copy of Windows XP so I can re-
install it?

Check here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm and scroll to the
bottom of the page. Please be advised that if your system came with XP
pre-installed then the manufacturer may have used an image when they
installed the OS and supplied you with another OEM version of XP. If so the
key displayed with the keyfinder may not be useable with the CD.

You can test it out though. Use the keyfinder to uncover the key used during
the install. Pop your XP CD into the drive (from the Desktop) and let it
autostart. Select Install->Upgrade. After you accept the License Agreement
you will immediately have to enter the Product Key. If the key works with
the CD installation will move to the next screen which you can cancel out of
if you wish. If the key won't work you will be informed that it is not a
valid key.

If the key won't work and your version is an OEM you will need to contact
your computer manufacturer for a new Product Key.
