View Full Version : Standby button gone missing

I hope someone can help.

I normally use either the Standby or Hibrnate button (on XP) rather than
switching off. That is until today when it has disappeared - or is grayed
out and can not be selected.

Can anyone tell me how to get it back. I can't think what I have done for
this to happen.

Thanks

This is likly do to an error with ACPI that has asked windows to demote you
to APM try this:
Go to Control Panel - Power Options, and if there is an APM page, check
'Enable APM' on it. I am not sure if this will fully support Standby,
but think so.

Thanks, however, there does not seem to be an APM anywhere. Also The
Hibernate tab which is normally there is missing.

Tiger, in Device Manager, what is the description of your computer? If your
system is not setup for power management, it will say "Standard PC." Also,
is power management enabled in BIOS setup screens?

The Device Manager indicates that it is an ACPI computer (under the
"Computer" tab). There are also ACPI entries (for power button and lid
etc). There seem to be no conflicts either.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Tiger, what happens if you press Start> Turn Off Computer. You've mentioned
the Standby button is present but greyed out. If you press Shift with this
screen displayed, does Hibernate appear and is it available or greyed out
too?

Back in Device Manager, use View> Show Hidden Devices. If you see APM Legacy
Device under System, is it enabled?

Were there any hardware or software changes to the system that occured right
before Standby became inaccessible? Any mention in Event Viewer about
standby or hibernate? You may have to double click any yellow or red notes
in this program to uncover this information.

There are not very many articles in the MS Knowledge Base about the
Hibernate page of Power Options disappearing but I did find one. Does any of
this sound familiar?
