When ever I go to close or shut down my windows XP my
computer acts like it's going to do it then instead it
will restart with out showing me the screen that say's
it's safe to turn off.
I've tried a couple things and now my clean-up won't do a
complete run either. I recently went throught the trouble
to reinsatll and that is still silch!
Sincerely, Charlie Eby

are you saying that when you choose shut down, the computer restarts instead
or that it never displays the 'computer is safe to turn off' dialog? well
new machines will not display this message, this would only happen on older
machines that could not power down the machine automatically. however, most
machines made since like 1996 and later will power down automatically.

Something that is running on your computer is causing a "System
Failure" error when Windows tries to close it. The default behaviour
in Windows XP is to automatically restart the computer when this type
of problem occurs.

To see the cause of these errors right-click on "My Computer" and
select Manage. Expand the Event Viewer category and browse through
each of the 3 sub categories looking for red-flagged error records
that correspond to your shutdown-restart incidents. Double click on
an error record to see the details of that error.

You can change this behaviour if you want. Open Control Panel -
System - Advanced - Startup and Recovery Settings and clear the
"automatically restart" checkbox in the System Failure section.

That will stop the rebooting at shutdown but it may be replaced by a
"Blue Screen Of Death" STOP error message and the system locking up
completely. If so then contents of the STOP message will be a clue
as to the actual cause. You can post the STOP error message
information back here if you require further advice or assistance.

Good luck
