As far as I know cdrom/cd-rw only run in PIO mode. DMA is
for hard drives

You are a bit out-of-date. My CDRW is communicating at UDMA2 and the DVD-ROM is
communicating at UDMA4 right now.

George,
Have you tried to double check the Advanced settings in the Device Manager for
the Secondary IDE channel to make sure it is set to do "DMA if available"?
