Cannot Read or Open CD-ROMs

Using XP Home, my CD-ROMs no longer show in "My Computer"
when double-clicking on the CD-Drive icon. The drive is
recognized as the icon is displayed & is working normally
in Device Manager.

I have tried right-clicking the icon and
clicking "Explore", but still nothing shows.

Properties displays zero used space and zero free space
and I am totally stumped. I have tried re-installing
the drivers from CD-ROM, but since the disc does not seem
to exist . . .?

Can anyone please help me with this?
