I bought a computer recently with Windows XP/Home Edition
and realized that it didn't have Word. Is there a generic
that I can download or can I go out and buy the program
to add it to my pc?

You can purchase Microsoft Word at your favorite store that sells
computers and/or software.

*No* version of Windows has ever included Word, or any other
application software. What may be confusing you is that the
company from which you bought your previous computers, running
older versions of Windows, undoubtedly included Word as part of
the package they sold you. That was the choice of that company,
for the model computer you bought. But Word was not part of
Windows.

Word is a commercial product, and there is no way to legally
download it. You can buy Word either by itself, as part of
Microsoft Office, or as part of Microsoft Works Suite (the
cheapest way to get it). Alternatively you can acquire a
competing office suite including a word processor, such as
WordPerfect, Open Office, or StarOffice.

Open Office http://www.openoffice.org/ can be configured to open and save
files as .DOC and other MS Office files. It is free and a decent alternative
to MS Office but is a huge download. Another freeware alternative is Easy
Office which is only 4MB

If you want spellcheck capabilities for Outlook Express you can use this
free add-on http://www.majorgeeks.com/article.php?sid=2952&cat=10
