How do I delete non-DOS partitions from my laptop HD??

I have a Sony VIO with a dead HD. I purchased a
refurbished HD with the same Mod#, thinking I could simply
install and format it. No such luck!! After installing
the new HD, and running the Sony #1 recovery disk, it
instructs me to delete the non-DOS partitions. How do I do
this from dos?? When I run fdisk, "Cannot Access Drive 1"
flashes across the bottom of the screen and non of the
options work. Any ideas or advice is greatly needed and
