View Full Version : Icon ordering in Explorer

This is pretty maddening.

Windows Explorer is displaying icons in a strange order that seems to be a
hybrid of name and type (i.e. all files and folders in alpha order, rather
than all folders in alpha order followed by all files in alpha order). I've
tried "Reset All Folders" in Folder Options, and various combinations of
View > Arrange Icons By, with no success.

What's the simplest way to reset the ordering?

As I said, I have tried this without success.

A typical folder shows its files and [folder] in this order:

icon.ico
led_off.png
led_on.png
[toolbar]
vowel_bar.png
vowel_pointer.gif

Choosing View > Arrange Icons By > Name just flips the order, from top to
bottom. The folder is still in the middle. I want all folders at the top of
the list.

Choosing View > Arrange Icons By > Type loses the alphabetical order and
sorts them like this:

[toolbar]
vowel_pointer.gif
icon.ico
led_off.png
led_on.png
vowel_bar.png

"Show in Groups" is not selected. Any other ideas, please?

Paul;

To sort items by categories such as date, name, size, and type, on the View
menu, point to Arrange Icons by, and then click the appropriate command.

Make sure you do NOT select Show in Groups!!!

[[Show in Groups allows you to group your files by any detail of the file,
such as name, size, type, or date modified. For example, if you group by
file type, image files appear in one group, Microsoft Word files appear in
another group, and Excel files in another. Show in Groups is available in
the Thumbnails, Tiles, Icons, and Details views. To show your files in
groups, on the View menu, point to Arrange Icons by, and then click Show in
Groups.]]
