All of the sudden my system does not recognize that I have
speakers. It seems to play the sound, but I do not hear
anything. I can hear downloads from the internet, but I
can not hear system sounds such as when I have an email, I
do not hear the ring.

also type of sound card and pc that you have. als could be
a setting that you may have turned off in your mail setting

Also,
Do you have a multimedia keyboard? Have you tried pressing the Mute button?
That is a very common thing to accidentally do.....
