View Full Version : DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM multi burner not recognised

I have a new Mat****a (aka Panasonic) sw-9581 multi
burner installed in a Time Computers system running
windows xp (home). The drive reads CDs and DVDs
satisfactorily. It also burns CD-Rs and CD-RWs but I
can't find any DVD recording software that recognises the
drive as a DVD burner (DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM are all
supported). Do I need an updated driver or firmware?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks for the link. I ran regedit check for my dvd
player drive and dvd burner drive - but couldn't detect
any errors - both drives seem to be correctly assigned.
However, i don't get a Recording tab for my dvd burner in
the Properties menu. Also checked that both drives are
on the windows xp hcl - so this isn't the issue either.

Thanks for your help - any other ideas would be welcome.

Hmmm....
Sorry that didn't help. It was sort of a long-shot.

That 9581 of yours must still be warm off the manufacturing line....
Panasonic doesn't even list a driver for it!
http://panasonic.jp/dvdram/lim/eoem/

Sure it isn't a 9571? Perhaps you could try one of those drivers? To see
whether you get the record tab?

I ran across the definitive info source on DVDs, while searching for
clues..... save this bookmark for sure!
http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html probably too much info,
actually.... enough to put on a DVD... ha ha

Good Luck,

I don't know if your still following this thread but if
you are then 'yes' it is a new burner and the model is
definitely sw-9581. Mat****a DVD-RAM sw-9581 to be
precise. Mat****a and Panasonic are the same company
apparently. Your quite right, Panasonic does not list a
driver for this model. Do you think it might be worth
trying one of other drivers anyway? Let me know what you
think.

Currently installed driver version is (5.1.2535.0)
Digital signer is Microsoft Windows XP Publisher

Thanks for all your advice. The other link contains a
wealth of information.

Whats wrong with the Pinnacle software Time supplied preinstalled on
the machine?
They put it on specifically for you to burn DVDs because XP does not
recognise the drive natively.
Check the software preload - I think you'll find its there. If not,
call Time

Thanks for your help - you're quite right. In my defence
the system came with minimal documentation. I'm used to
using Nero Burning software - does this mean that the
only DVD burning software I can use is the preloaded
Pinnacle software? Will drivers eventually become
available to enable windows xp to recognise the drive
natively?

Thanks again for your help.

You won't damage anything by trying the previous driver.... It is
disappointing that they released the hardware before they released a driver
for it, but maybe that's a sign that it doesn't matter. We can only hope.

But about this Pinnacle software.... It came with the drive? I would
certainly defer to the software (and hopefully driver(s)) that came with the
hardware.... It may why Panasonic hasn't listed it yet. The gap between
developers, and vendors. At any rate, I would thoroughly eliminate it as a
source for drivers, before trying to use a predecessor driver.

For example, I installed the latest driver for my Geforce card, the day it
was released by NVIDIA, but 3 weeks later, Microsoft sent me a notice
stating that I could update to a 'new' version.... but it was really the
very same, just delayed in posting because of the bureaucracies.

Keep checking that Panasonic site.... I imagine they'll post a driver sooner
or later. By then, you'll have made your own DVD about the journey.

Good luck,

Theres a couple of different issues there
1) whether Microsoft issue a patch to enable this (and other DVD
drives) to be recognised natively by windows
2) Whether Nero/Roxio update their software to recognise them.
I guess both will happen eventually, but when??
As soon Nero/Roxio does become available use it. The Pinncle software
is pretty buggy. One example is the software tries to reinstall itself
if you try to setup a game using Microsoft's MSI installer system.
There are also a number of disk compatibility issues (sorry I dont
have details)

FYI just found another bug:
Installing AOL8 forces the Pinnacle software to try and reinstall itself
You have to keep clicking cancel...

Thanks again for your help with this matter. I'll
stuggle on with the Pinnacle software for the time being.
