I just set up my own computer and installed a new hard
drive and put XP on it. Whenever I play a game or do
anything that requires the computer to do work, it
freezes. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Check out your hardware:
1. Make sure your CPU and case temperatures are OK.
2. Shut down your computer and turn off power at the
surge protector or unplug it. Take the standard
protections against static electricity.
3. Open up your computer and dust it out. Make sure
all your CPU and case fans are working.
4. Reseat all the modules and cables inside your computer.
5. Do a hardware reset of your CMOS and set up your
BIOS again.
6. Run a full set of hardware diagnostics. ("diag378.exe",
downloadable from ftp://ftp1.dell.com/diags, after a few
complains, will run on most non-Dell computers.)
You should get zero errors.
7. Run "memtest86" (download from http://www.memtest86.com)
to thoroughly check out your memory. You should get
zero errors.

Hmm. Russell, in addition to those excellent ideas, you might also verify
that your 'Virtual Memory' is set to "System-managed size" in -
My Comp/Properties/Advanced.
Please post a follow-up.

Why people like this post in a newsgroup is beyond me. They expect you to
be a mind reader and see what they do. PLEASE if you expect an intelligent
answer you have to provide more information such as hardware type, size, age
and model. Memory, and simple things like the BIOS date and version would
help in providing an answer.

If you have followed the thread you posted, you know that although someone
may have come up with suggestions, most just wondered if you had more
information.
Please - tell us more about your problem. What you have done to try and
solved it? What web searches you have done? What your event log tells you?
Is your system up to date with patches? Do you have an AntiVirus software
(up-to-date) installed and have you scanned for Viruses? Have you checked
your machine for adware/spyware? Have you made sure the hardware is well
ventilated - getting lots of cool air inside? Have you defragmented your
hard drive? Checked for hard drive issues? Tried different memory?
If you don't know how to get back to the message you posted, please review
the information below my signature on using the newsgroups.
