View Full Version : USB ports don't detect new devices after scratch load of XP

Jim Trawick
December 5th 03, 01:18 AM
I recently cleaned the drive and loaded XP Pro from
scratch (previously installed W2K Pro), and immediately
installed SP1a from the MSDN DVD, and went through
literally ALL the online updates (which claim to be SP2
HotFixes). All of the install was done with no USB
devices connected, and the device manager shows all of
the VIA USB hubs and host controllers operating properly.
The USB ports no longer detect new devices (a Casio
camera and a Logitech QuickCam used in software I'm
developing). In Microsoft Knowledge Base Article -
314634, "Windows XP Does Not Detect Your New USB Device",
the two .sys files are exactly the right version, but the
registry key it says to add a value
to, "HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\
Usb", doesn't exist. There is a usbehci key, a usbuhci
key and a usbhub key under
HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es, and
a USB key under
HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum, but
that's all. Being reluctant to trash my registry, I
haven't tried adding the value to any of these other
keys. It worked fine under W2K. What key is KB Article
314634 supposed to reference? Does it have anything to do
with my problem?

Hi Jim,

If the key doesn't exist, create it by clicking on the "services" key, =
then click edit/new/key and call it "usb". Then click on it, and create =
the described entries (edit/new/string value). Did you obtain the needed =
hotfix as well?

KB Article 314634 indicates that the hotfix is part of
service pack 1, which is installed (1a, actually), and
results in version 5.1.2600.26 of Usbhub.sys (52,736
bytes) and version 5.1.2600.26 of Usbport.sys (130,688
bytes), both of which are correct in SYSTEM32, and no
different versions of those two files exist on the hard
drive. I can't find any other reference to a specific
hotfix. Do I need anything else?

The fact that I was supposed to only edit an existing
key, not create a new one, makes me concerned that either
the KB article is incorrect and I'm supposed to edit
something else, or something isn't installed right.

Hi Jim,
Please create the usb key in the registry as per community member. I am
providing you the steps to for creating the same.
1. Click Start -> Run, input "regedit" and click OK.

2. Locate the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es

3. Right-click Services, choose New -> Key, input "Usb".

4. Right-click this newly created "Usb" key, then choose New -> DWORD Value,
create the following value:

Value name: DisableSelectiveSuspend

Data type: REG_DWORD

Radix: Decimal

Value data: 1

5. Quit registry and restart the computer.

Thanks,
Ajit Mohan

Already did that, no joy. Still won't detect USB devices
when plugged in. Even tried a scanner and a joystick. USB
is enabled in the BIOS. Tried front-panel, back-panel and
motherboard USB jacks. Ghosted this guy, restored ghosted
W2K Pro, works. Back on XP Pro, dead. What have I not
tried?

I noticed after you said you re-installed Xp that you made no mention of the
motherboard drivers. Have you installed them?

Jim Trawick
December 5th 03, 01:19 AM
I guess I didn't specifically say that I'd installed the
chipset drivers, but I did say that the device manager
shows all of the VIA USB hubs and host controllers
versioned and operating properly, which I had supposed
implied that. All of the VIA KT400 drivers have been
loaded, including the USB 2.0 drivers. 80% of the files
from that install have been replaced by subsequent XP SP1
updates.

Hi Jim,

It's good to be concerned, however in this case you actually do need to =
create the new key. As long as you have the right version of those =
files, this is all you should need.

I appreciate your attempts to calm my fears, Rick, but it
doesn't appear to do anything. I've even tried other
devices (a CH joystick and an HP scanner), no joy. I
Ghosted the drive (after I created the Usb key and set
the DisableSelectiveSuspend value to 1), to save it,
restored my Ghost of W2K, and the ports work, so it
doesn't seem to be hardware or BIOS. Restored this XP
Ghost, restored the problem, as well. This should be
simple, but it's got me really frustrated.

Did indeed, first thing I checked (bit me once on a
scanner problem many moons ago). This A7V8X has 6
separate USB ports, but the Award BIOS only has two flags
for USB, Legacy Support (AUTO) and USB Function
(Enabled). It also runs the ports under W2K, which I
recently restored as a test (did I mention that I really
like Ghost?).

Hi Jim,

Well, to be honest, I don't really have any further answers. Have you =
used the latest BIOS update on the board? There is one dated 5/14/03 at =
the asus site. Other than that, I cannot see anything further that you =
may have missed.

Many thanks for you valiant efforts. Casio (one of the
cameras that first evidenced the problem) indicates that
they've discovered a problem with their USB drivers WRT
Media Player 9, which I updated with the rest of the XP
stuff. They indicate that their fix "might take some
time", and recommend uninstalling MP9. Might be something
similar, here. I'm going to go back to a scratch load,
bring it up just to SP1a, without MP9 or any other post-
1a updates, and see if I can get it to play.

Again, many thanks.

Before I got a chance to do the scratch load (OK, I
procrastinate when things are really painful) I tried
deleting all of the USB devices in the Device Manager,
powered down and rebooted (could probably just have
rebooted), allowing XP to reinstall them all (Many, Many
thanks to Chris Hecker for the tip). All devices are now
detected normally, and there is joy in Mudville tonight.

My guess is that XP or SP1a doesn't install something
correctly if the driver files are being loaded at the
same time (timing/dependency problem?). Don't know who to
approach with that.
