I upgraded my system and installed the windows XP disk I
had purchased for my old system now I want to move it to
my new system but when I register my copy it says I have
exceded my install times. Can I not use hte XP again
even if the other system is trashed?

Yes, but you need to Activate by telephone and explain the situation.
They'll give you a new activation code.

Doug,
Do you know if I can do the same thing if a purchase the full OEM version of
XP from one of the motherboard/parts companies. I know that MS will
provide a new key for the Retail version, but not sure about the Full OEM.
I want to add another hard drive and load XP (Dual
Boot) on my old system. Then this winter, build a new box and move XP to
it. I'm not sure if I will order Home or Pro.
Thanks in advance, Joe

I'm not Doug, but the license for OEM versions ties them to the
first computer they are installed on. Once installed, an OEM
version can not be moved to another computer.

not true, if you call MS and explain the situation they will allow you to
move it to another system!!! But remember, one machine at a time is all
that you are allowed to have it installed on.

Greetings --
OEM versions must be sold with a piece of hardware (normally a
motherboard or hard drive, if not an entire PC, although Microsoft has
greatly relaxed the hardware criteria for WinXP) and are _permanently_
bound to the first PC on which they are installed. An OEM license,
once installed, is not legally transferable to another computer under
any circumstances. This is the best reason to avoid OEM versions; if
the PC dies or is otherwise disposed of (even stolen), you cannot
re-use your OEM license on a new PC.
That said, some of the folks who answer the telephone activation
lines seem not to have been properly trained, and have been known to
issue new activation codes for OEM license transfers. Maybe you'll
get lucky when you call, maybe not.

Bruce,
This seems logical, but some don't agree, what is your source?
