How do you change the font colors under the desktop icons
say, if you have a white background?

You can open the display applet from your control panel and go to the
appearance tab.
Click on advanced and change the colour of the correct item from the item
list.

If you use the drop shadows setting so that the icon label is transparent
(no holes in wallpaper), you get white text edged with a shadow.
If you turn the drop shadows off, you will see white text if Display>
Appearance> Advanced> Desktop is set to a dark color. Black text if using a
light color. You also have to endure holes in your wallpaper. :(

Wanted to add a suggestion... I occasionally use the "Friends" wallpaper in
XP and have doctored it so that it's usable with white text. Using a
graphics editing program, a burn tool and a soft gradual brush, I darkened
the edges. Saved the results as "Friends2" to preserve the original image.
If avoiding holes in your wallpaper is desired, some similar editing should
work with your wallpaper image.
