I want to start all over with my windows xp. I need to
uninstall xp and then reinstall. I have rebuilt my
computer and can't use a restore disk. Do I have to buy
the upgrade package of xp or the full version.

I am guessing that by 'rebuilt' you have changed the motherboard or
something like that. Because of this, your restore disk will only work with
the original hardware that it was designed with. You will have to contact
the manufacturer or the support facility of where you purchased the computer
about wheather they offer a windows setup disk and you could then use your
original licence. Otherwise you will need to purchase a copy of windows xp.
Note that with windows 2000 onwards, the upgrade and full install options
are on the same cd.

Whether you buy upgrade or full will depend on whether you have a previous
version of Windows that qualifies for the upgrade. Whichever you get, the
process will be to boot the computer with the XP disk and start install
from there. During setup you will be prompted for the destination
partition. There you can delete/recreate or format existing partitions to
remove the current installation.

The answer depend on whether you own a previous qualifying
version of Windows If you do, you can use either; if you don't,
you need the full version.

You *can* use the upgrade to a clean installation; just insert
the previous qualifying version's CD when prompted to do so.

Actually the ability to do a clean installation with an upgrade
version goes back way before Windows 2000--at least to Windows 98
and probably earlier. The requirement to do a clean installation
has long been to *own* a previous qualifying version, not to have
it installed.
