View Full Version : Help IRQ 3 being assigned to most hardware ....

Is there anyway to fix this?
It looks like my MB is assigning other values at boot up (screen flashjes to
fast to read) but windows is assigning IRQ 3 to whatever it can. (see end of
message)
I've tried unistalliong these various devices including the PIC driver, PCI
bus driver but this is what I get and windows doesn't tun well with
everything on IRQ 3!!
If you got suggestion please reply to
thanks

Are you having any problems because of this? NO? Then leave well enough
alone. Windows XP knows how to manage the hardware just fine!

Yes I am having problems, that's why I posted the query.
Having Video / USB (mouse) / Sound / High Speed Modem all on the SAME IRQ is
going to have problems.
All hardware on a IRQ has to asked if it generated the request on every
request, thus with soo many devices on the same IRQ there is a lot of
overhead and potential for data loss.
This hardware configuration did not used to do this the IRQ assignments were
spread amonst all available IRQs and I didn't have poppy sound / jerky mouse
/ unable to play videos while doing high speed data transfers / etc
Not too mention other devices that are also sometimes get used on the USB
ports.

IRQ's over 15 are virtual IRQ's...they are not the same as
the real ones. As far as the bios is concerned, all of
his devices are sharing resources.
I would advise the above and make a com port use that
irq. Also, many bioses let you assign irq's to specific
slots.

I have 3 items on IRQ 16, 2 on IRQ 19, 2 on IRQ 20, 2 on IRQ 21 and 2 on
IRQ 22.
Please note that I have no problems with these multiple assignments. Most
others don't either. When push comes to shove, you will probably find out
that you have driver problems.
If you really want to have some fun, disable the service that controls this.
Your computer will not likely even boot!

It's because his motherboard supports APIC (Advanced Programmable
Interrupt Controller) Many newer boards support this now. I have devices
listed on IRQ's going up to 23. You can find many links to pages about
APIC here http://makeashorterlink.com/?H2B125945
Also as to your IRQ sharing resulting from your motherboard supporting
ACPI (different from APIC) check out this page.
