I once had a friend who was packing up his belongings to move to a new
house, and casually set his box of floppy disks on his stereo speakers as he
was loading up the car..... he didn't think anything about this... until a
few weeks later, when he tried to read from them.... the magnet in the
speaker ruined the delicate little magnetic coding on the floppies -
effectively unformatting them... And people wonder why their VCR tapes
lose clarity after a awhile, as they reach for a tape next to their TV....
magnets are everywhere.....

Ok, first.... if the floppy has never worked.... try powering off the
machine, removing the case cover, and carefully reseating the gray drive
cable. Sometimes they can be put on, offset by a pin.

If you know it has worked before.... then this might be worth a shot....

Have you tried this procedure?

1. Access the Startup menu of the computer by pressing F8 during startup.

2. Choose Safe mode from the Startup menu and press Enter.

3. Click Start, select Settings, and choose Control Panel.

4. Double-click the System icon.

5. Select the Device Manager tab.

6. In Device Manager, look for "Disk drives" and click the [+] sign to list
the floppy drive(s)
7. Select each drive and click Remove.

8. Click OK for the warning. Repeat this process until each drive is
removed.

9. Restart the computer. XP will auto detect and reinstall the floppy disk
drivers when you boot

Sorry I don't have anything definitive....

Please post with your results,
