I'm running XP Professional. 2.2 GHz P4 processor, 1024 MB Ram, 120GB hard drive. Whenever I try to open an mpeg video, the media player goes through the searching for codec, says it failed to download the codec, then says "playing", but the screen is blan
k- no audio or video. I checked for updates but there are none. I tried reinstalling Media Player but it doesn't change. It worked previously, and I haven't made any changes to the system recently. I tried to use system restore to go back, but it says it
can't load any of my restore points. Everything else seems to be working ok.

I had the exact same problem with divx videos. Try opening the file in a different player. If you have WinAmp 3, try that, also you can download other players (I use DivX Player) for those types of files.
If the problem persists, maybe there's an update on the windows update page that will help.

Those are MPEG-2. You would need to purchase an MPEG-2/DVD decoder to play
them back.

Reinstall it then. If WMP is trying to download a codec for an MPEG it's
99.9% of the time MPEG-2.
