I want to upgrade NT to XP. If I do a clean install, can
I upgrade to XP home, instead of XP professional?

not if you are using the retail upgrade disk. you cannot upgrade from nt4
wks to xphome with the retail upgrade disk. however, if you have a win98/se
disk, you can use the xp upgrade disk to install onto the same machine,
using the 98 disk for verification; you will keep your data, but have to
reinstall all programs and such.

best thing to do, as long as you have a 98 disk, would be to backup your
entire machine and format/install xp on your hdd - pristine installations
are always better than upgrades and clean installs/reinstalls, in my
opinion.

You need a qualifying previous operating system. NT qualifies for
XP Professional, but not XP Home.

But if you also own a Windows 95, 98, 98SE, or Me CD, you can use
that as proof of ownership and do a clean installation.

Sorry, that's not correct. Although it's true that you can't
upgrade to XP over the top of Windows 95, you *can* use a Windows
95 CD as proof of ownership of a previous Qualifying version when
doing a clean installation, as I said.

Whether Microsoft meant for this to work this way or not, I don't
know for sure (I suspect not), but that's the way it does work.
