I installed a new hard drive, and I have 2 problems. 1 when formatting it
only gave me 12+ GB instead of 80 GB. and 2 my XP install CD won't boot. Can
suggest what I can do as far as getting my cdrom to read my install disk and
getting my entire 80 gigs... Any help would be appreciated...

sounds like you may have an old motherboard. older motherboards, usually the
ones that do not support booting from cdrom, also cannot read/address large
hard disks. you can try updating your bios, but i doubt this would enable
these features. you will likely have to replace your motherboard. when you
see the post screen, does the bios detect all 80gb of the hard disk? have
you checked cmos setup to see if you can change the boot order to cdrom
first? has the machine ever been able to boot from cdrom?

Hello Dan,
It's a brand new out of the box AMD 2200. At the post it sees all 80 gigs. I
have set the boot order to CDROM first boot. Brand new machine I am building
for my son who is home from college. I am using his CDRW as well as his old
HD for a D drive. Everything else is new Case, RAM, C Drive, Board, CPU,
Fan, Floppy. Can you step me thru from beginning in case I missed something?
Grateful for any help...

Have you Fdisked the hard drive? As for your cd not booting, is it a
legitimate copy? You can download a set of 6 floppy disks from the
Microsoft web site that will load all the cdrom drivers, then you can set up
XP from there. You might also want to try www.bootdisk.com , you may be
able to get them from there.

I did fdisk the hard drive but I guess I could have done something wrong due
the fact that I am a novice of sorts. I also tried the set of six disks and
got as far as #3 and I got this error message"File \vgaoem.fon could not be
loaded errorcode is 4" and it is a legitimate copy purchased from a
retailer. Can you give me step by step fdisk procedure? And any other help
ould be appreciated...

Hi,
I don't think a boot disc will help as xp boots from the cd and you can
format your drive when installing xp. Have you set the jumpers on both the
drives (cd roms and hd Drives) to master and slave? You should also check
the jumpers on the motherboard.

FDISK can be used to remove NTFS partitions if one so chooses.
