Desktop pictures

I put a personal pic as background on my desktop, but cant get it to fit. If I hit stretch the image is distorted to cover the screen. If I hit tile or center I get a small piece of the image only. How do I get the whole image as the dektop without distort
ion?

By cropping it to the ratio 4:3 (w x h) in Paint.
