Hi,
I cannot change file type associations to required applications I have tried
Start
Control Panel
Folder Options
File Types
Select type of file association
"CHANGE" and ADVANCED do not get highlighted or me to change the
application I want the file type to associate to
eg. *.mp3 from Media player to another application.
I have also tried Open with I can change temporarily to another application
not permenantly
I have also tried from folder menu
Thanks in advance

If you're not having any luck with one method, perhaps try another?
Suggestion: In Media Player's Tools> Options> File Types, uncheck the box
for *.mp3 files. Then open your desired player and look for a similar menu
that will let you associate this file type with that player.

Have you tried booting in safe mode and try from there?

I've run into a few programs that will grab hold of an associations and then
be stubborn about releasing it. Very trying situation. Graphic programs, for
example, may take a common extension such as BMP and recategorize it as
"Program X Graphic File."
One approach is to find the program that has hijacked the extension. Remove
it from the program's group of extensions via the program's menus for File
Associations or use brute force by removing the extension from the group in
Folder Options> File Types. Then creating a new and separate association for
it.
Another approach, simple but effective, is to install/reinstall a desired
program with a setup routine that includes a screen for associating file
types.
What is set up as your default player if you look at Control Panel>
Add/Remove Programs> Set Program Access and Defaults? Are you logged on to
an account with administrative rights when making these changes?
