Found where microsoft told me with OE 6 spell checker not
compatiable with XP but would work with word, excel, or
powerpoint. Do I have to go out and buy one of these
programs to get spell checker to work? Does anoyone know
why microsoft didn't include any of these programs with
XP?

MS has NEVER included any applications (other than IE and OE) with Windows.

No, it's not that OE's spell checker is not compatible with XP,
it's that there is no Outlook Express spell checker.
No version of Outlook Express has ever included a spell checker.

All versions of Outlook Express have always used the spell
checker that comes with Microsoft Office.

No. There are also third-party spell checkers (free or
inexpensive) that will work with OE. I have no personal
experience with any of them, so I'll leave it to someone else to
recommend one.

It has nothing to do with XP. Microsoft has never included any of
these programs with *any* version of Windows. There's nothing new
here. Microsoft sells operating systems and they sell application
software; the two are separate.

Greetings --
Outlook Express, as you've discovered, has no spell-checking
capabilities of its own. Instead, it relies upon the presence of
other Microsoft applications, such as the Office Suite, Word, or the
Works Suite. There are also some 3rd-party shareware/freeware
solutions available at any of the many shareware sites on the Internet
Spell Magic seems well thought-of, though I haven't tried it myself:

Neither the Microsoft Office application suite, nor any of its
individual component applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
Outlook, etc.), have _ever_ been "part" of any Windows operating
system. They are, and always have been, separate applications, that
must be purchased and installed separately.
