How can I start real Dos, not Windows emulation. I have
Windows XP home edition. In Windows 98 you can start Dos
while your computer is starting. Can I do it in Windows
XP?

You can create a Windows Boot disk by formatting a floppy and put the system
files on it. It will not load any drivers for any hardware attached to the
computer. If your hard drive is formatted in NTFS instead of Fat32 the
computer will not be able to read or write to it when booted from the
floppy. Now, why do you need to start "REAL DOS"? The "emulation" provided
by the cmd prompt works with most DOS programs if the compatibility settings
are correct.

Not with WinXP. One option is to boot the PC using a Win98/95/ME boot
floppy. But if you have installed WinXP on an NTFS drive, then you will not
be able to read that drive when in real DOS mode (unless you have a NTFS
file system driver loaded)

No. There is no real DOS underlying Windows XP. The only way you
can do this is to boot from a DOS diskette. And if your hard
drive is NTFS, doing so will not let you access that drive.

Hi,

The DOS version in XP is different from that in Windows
98. You no longer get dos functionality in Win XP. But u
can use hte compatibility mode to run ur programs in
different modes.

No, there is *no* DOS version in Windows XP. There is a command
prompt, which provides DOS emulation, but it's not true DOS.

That's not at all true. That DOS emulation provides much (but not
all) of the standard DOS functionality.

That's only *sometimes* necessary. Many DOS programs run just
fine without using compatibility mode.
