I was trying to remove a program that I believe is a spyware program
(Owmngr.exe) It wouldn't let me remove it because it said it was write
protected or in use. It wasn't in use because I blocked it with Norton.
Anyway, I changed some attributes in the System32 folder so I could delete
it.
Anyway I decided to go back where I was by using the restore point wizard. I
went back one day to June 2nd.
However when it boots up it says some files are corrupt and for me to use
the CD to correct the problem. The CD don't do much good, I just get the
same message saying to use the CD . I was able to get to appoint that said
the NTOSKRNL.exe was corrupt or missing.
My question is how do I restore that file? I searched my XP Pro CD and it
wasn't on it, but it is in a few places on my machine.
Can anyone tell me what I need to do, would reinstalling XP correct the
problem?
Thanks for any and all help....

Removal directions for owmngr.exe:
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm#owmngr
For the missing ntoskrnl.exe:
The file only needs to be replaced if it's damaged. Often the file is just
fine and the error message is complaining, in a very obscure way, that the
values in the boot.ini are incorrect. If you have XP's Recovery Console
available to you, you can use it to fix the boot info in that file:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314477
That particular article also gives the steps for replacing the file if it
becomes apparent that is necessary.
If your XP CD is the type that can run a repair install, check out:
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm
NOTE: Some OEM CDs do not offer the same repair options as a standard XP CD.
The process may work different as well. If you have an OEM CD, check the
documentation that came with the system for more information.
