I'll definitely confirm all cables and connections are
solid.

Does anyone else havve any suggestions? Any other tools
or diagnostic utilities available at the dos level to help
me determine the cause of my problems? Thanks.

Have you tried repairing XP this way?:
Pop in the XP cd then restart, boot from the cd. Then at
the setup menu, choose option #1 (Install Windows XP).
Then setup will scan for any previous Windows
installations, when it detects that there is already a
Windows OS on your drive, press R to have setup try to
repair that version of Windows. If that doesn't work, then
I'm sorry to have wasted your time.
