Greetings wlc,
The key for keeping Messenger working using a router is Universal Plug and Play (UPnP)
support. Nowadays a good number of the router specs indicate UPnP support right on the box,
but you might want to make up a list of routers available locally (or from the web) and then
see which support UPnP (and whatever specs you want).
