Recently changed from lan-city cable modem to Motorola
Surfboard 5100, per order of Comcast. Running XP pro.Every
reboot resets ip address to 0.0.0.0. Only workaround is to
open network properties, insert a manual ip address,
close out, reopen, switch to automatically find ip address
and dns server and close out again. At this point,
everything works, but it is a real pain doing this each
time I reboot. Any ideas would be most welcome.

Sounds like your ISP needs to provide tech support and
properly register YOUR Surfboard 5100.
Try turning the modem off and the computer, then back on.
It would help to be on the telephone with the ISP while you
do this.
