hard drive upgrade

I have a laptop and I put a firewire port in. Then i
bought a 120 Gig external firewire hard drive. When i
plug the drive in the eject hardware icon comes up, and it
says the drive is enabled, however it doesn't put an icon
in My Computer for me to access the drive. Do I have to
format it? What can i do?

Right click on My Computer and select Manage.

On the following screen, select Disk Management.

The new driver should appear on the right hand side of the screen, from
where you can partition and format it (if required) and assign it a drive
letter.

No version of Windows Explorer can 'see' an unpartitioned and unformatted
drive.
