Unmountable_boot_volume

Evey 3 months or so I get that mesage and have to format
the hard drive, any ideas on how to resolve without
formatting

Power off, open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
If that fails:

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.
