View Full Version : Floppy Drive on XP

Built new computer. Windows XP. Orig no floppy.
Installed old (working) floppy and it recognizes it, but
gives "INSERT DISK" pop up which reads "Please insert
floppy disk into drive A". Inserting floppy disk does
nothing and looks like it can't recognize the floppy disk
in the drive. Help would be appreciated.

Try a different floppy disk; try reseating the floppy cable;
otherwise, replace the drive.

Bob: Tried another working floppy drive which gave me the
same result. Also tried this drive in the other machine -
which worked. I'll shut down and check the cable where
connected to controller on MB. I'll let you know result.

Bob: All connections tight. Note that the light for the
floppy drive is ON all the time. Could there be a
problem in the bios or some setting somewhere? When I
first booted up etc. there was no floppy and I set
something which let me boot with CD. hal

To Bob Day: this is repeat of reply that seems to have
vanished. Connections all good. light at the floppy
drive stays on without floppy in it. Could there be a
problem in the bios or some setting...perhapse related to
the fact that when I loaded the operating system XP there
was not floppy on board and the CD was the boot drive??
I can't figure this out.

Hmm. Try this: Right click "My Computer", click "Manage",
then "Device Manager". Expand "Floppy disk controllers",
and double click (I would guess) "Standard floppy disk
controller". Under "General" does it say, "This device is
working properly."? If not, you could try pursuing
"Troubleshoot...". Or, whether it's "working properly" or not,
under the "Driver" tab, you might try uninstalling the driver,
then rebooting, and then reinstalling the driver when you get
"New hardware found".

If the light is on all the time, your floppy cable is on backwards.

Check your bios for boot sequence....system may be set to boot from floppy.

Curt: There has been not floppy drive in this system
until today and the system has worked perfectly for
months. Boots from CD-RW which was the only drive until I
now installed the CD-ROM and the floppy drive. I'm not
that familiar with the bios and am edgy about making
changes in it without some idea of what it should be. Can
you be more specific about how it should be set? I repeat
that the system seems to be working fine except that I
cannot use the floppy drive - when I insert floppy it
still says "put a floppy in A" (paraphrase), and it cannot
read the floppy. The indicator light for the floppy stays
on all the time. Hal

The light is on all the time because the IDE cable is on upside down.

Hal,
On your boot screen, you are normally instructed to 'hit or press' a
particular key to enter the bios. Once there, you are shown a list of
options to choose from to change settings, (the boot sequence for example),.
Be very careful and follow the on screen instructions to get to the area
you're looking for. If, after checking things out and something is amiss,
make the changes necessary. Exit the bios, saving the changes. If no changes
were made, exit bios WITHOUT saving changes. Normal boot should continue
from there. As to the light on the a:drive being on all the time, I've never
heard of this being due to an upside-down cable, but you never know. I tend
to think like you that if the drive was functioning in another machine, then
a simple cleaning will not solve anything, but it's worth a try.
Good luck,
Curt.
