John: Both floppy drives work in my old Pentium & W98
computer and neither works in the new Athlon & XP
computer. This makes me wonder if it is a matter of
cleaning the floppy drive. In light of that information,
what do you think ? Still blow out the drive ? hal

Sounds to me as though the ribbon is attached incorrectly in the new
computer.

Thanks to Bob,Curt, Paul,John,Maureen who contributed.
Happy to report that the floppy is working. The 5th (or
was it the 6th) time I reversed the cable attachment to
the floppy drive and checked all connections...... it
worked (and the light) as it should. I note that the
drive now ejects the floppy with much more energy - like
on my other computers. I suspect multiple problems were
finally overcome (with a little luck), but consider that
it was primarily a cabling problem. Thanks again for your
encouragement and input. l
