I have a number of programs that start when I start windows. I wish to
remove them. (Task bars, calendar watchers etc.). I have tried going
through msconfig-start as mentioned in other posts but I get a message when
I reboot that I am in diagnostic mode or something. If I click normal mode
it reverts to original settings.

Just check the check box in the message window that appears and you will not
see that window again. All the startup items that you had unchecked will
stay unchecked.

Captain Clem,
First try to disable the "Startup" function from within the program, if
there is no option for disabling the program(s) from starting up, then visit
the following site for a list of locations where programs startup and
disable them from there;
http://aumha.org/win4/a/loads.htm
Many people recommend using MSConfig, but it was not really intended as a
tool for this purpose, the real purpose of MSConfig is to troubleshoot
problems and temporarily disable programs from there, that's why you see the
screen message about running in diagnostic mode.

Stop the Selective Startup Screen (Line 173)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Or...remove the runkeys from
here: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
Of course if you're in a selective start-up, you'll need to put that back
first so the registry keys are moved back there or find the disabled run key
and delete them from there.
