Windows Will Not Boot

Tod ay I had some difficulty booting windows XP home
edition. I have tried booting in the safe mode but it only
will boot up to the Mup.sys file and stops. I attempted to
reload windows from the original disk and it will only go
as far as loading windows before it locks up. My dos disk
will not allow me to see my hard drives so it is impossible
to correct file errors etc. I even tried to format the c:
drive (heaven help me) with no luck. Do I have a hardware
problem or a software problem? I cannot tell!? I obviously
have an extremely nasty virus or some kind of hardware
problem. I have tried all that I know, and I am stuck. Not
sure if I need to buy a barebones system and start over or
if I can repair it. Obviously if it is software it can be
fixed.

Any one who has had a similar problem or knows what to do I
would most appreciate some help.

PS - I installed a 3 1/2 floppy drive thinking a start up
disk would help but to no avail.

Do you have a FAT32 or NTFS file system? Have you tried doing a fdisk /mbr?
If this doesn't work have you tried using fdisk to recreate your disk
partitions? If you have a third party software such as partition magic you
can sometimes determine if you have corrupted partition tables and then fix
them.

Maybe even if you're infected with a virus, it's possible that you can get
back up and running so you can do a a virus scan. If you have a Windows XP
CD or an OEM Windows XP CD try doing a Repair Install, which will leave your
data files and programs alone, and repair Windows XP. It's worth a try.

Windows XP Repair Install, including screenshots, go to:

When the page opens, scroll down and click on: How To Run A Repair
Install.

What you will lose though, are any Windows Updates that you might have
installed. They will have to be installed again. But if it gets you up and
running again, that would be only a minor annoyance.
