View Full Version : Radeon Grapic card woes II

Like Mark Godwin, I too am having problems with this
card. I upgraded from Win 98 to XP. I got horizontal
distortion at 800x600 screen resolution and XP never shut
down. I am forced to physically switch off the machine.
Like Mark I got indications of graphics driver problems.
I upgraded my drivers and then my card. Nothing worked. I
am a developer and know several other developers and a
number of other XP users that have given up on this
product and gone back to Win 2000. I think it would be
wise for Microsoft to attend to this issue!

Hmm. Curious. Three days ago, I switched out the Nvidia MX400 for a
9200/128, under XP-H. Also took the opportunity to attach a second monitor
for first time ever.
Not a spot of trouble. A bit complex, what with the second screen and
all...but after a bit of experimentation (about 2 hours on & off) everything
perfect now.
I'm VERY happy with the Radeon.

George...I just noticed that you actually have a Radeon "Grapic" card. A
genuine Radeon product would certainly be called a "Graphic" card.
It's unfortunate that a few unscrupulous companies try to slip stuff like
this past an unwary public...and bypass copyright and patent laws by
altering the name slightly. (Ever hear of a "Rolecks" watch?!)
Clearly this is a cheap knock-off, and likely the source of your problems.
(I couldn't resist.)
Keep us posted!

It is genuine alright but I am not having your luck. I am
convinced that it is software related. Perhaps a
compatibility problem with my McAfee software or SQL
Server 2000, etc. or the driver installation did not work
correctly. Also I have an AMD Athlon not an Intel chip
set.

Just a typo, it wasn't a veiled denigration of Radeon.
My theory is that there is a software incompatibility
between XP, the drivers, and possibly other apps. I
really do know at least 4 other people who reverted back
to Win 2000 after upgrading to XP. I upgraded from Win
98. Maybe a clean install works and an upgrade does not?
The problem is we all run different stuff. I do know that
I had a brief period during installation of all my apps
where XP seemed to be OK and my machine shut down
correctly and I had no distortion problems.
Unfortunately, I did not execute a step-by-step testing
procedure as I installed the apps.

Yes - a typo. I realized, but the opportunity to jab you was too hard to
resist.
Interesting. I too, am running a Athlon XP. On a ECS mobo, with Mcafee
VSO. So - it will work, but you're right; we all have different stuff.
Evidently YOUR stuff is more "different" than MY stuff.
OK, more jabbing. But seriously...is a clean install out of the question?
(Now that you know that the s/w is almost definitely the source of the
problem)? Because changing the vidcard at this point will prob not solve
the [underlying] problem anyway.
Chew it over a bit and let me know. Perhaps I can assist in some way.
