Hi I have a friend who has lost the ability to connect to the internet using
his modem. He reinstalled windows xp home, using the restore cd provided by
his computer manufacturer, to the factory defaults. However this did not
solve the problem. Using the New Connection Wizard when he comes to the 4th
screen titled HOW DO YOU WANT TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET? the first 2
options are greyed out and only the Connect using a broadband connection is
available. Suffice to say he does not have a broadband connection. He
previously was able to connect to the internet using his modem until he
switched his computer on this morning. His modem seems to be detected by the
computer and if he runs the modem diagnostic software it detects the modem
and the dial tone but fails when it tries to dial out. Has anyone any ideas
or suggestions?

Thanks, Sophie
