Many files on xp have become corrupted, such as disk
defrag, and windows has become unstable. A quick
reinstall should do the trick, but that is the problem.
If i were to reinstall would I have to re-register? And
if so would the old product key be still valid? Any Help
is greatly appreciated :)

Hi, Michael.
First, try the System File Checker, as someone suggested. At the Run
prompt, type: sfc /scannow
A more thorough solution is the "in-place upgrade", as described by
Microsoft here:
How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q315341
As the KB article says, this is not intended as a time saver; it will take
about as long as a new installation, and you should visit Windows Update
when you get back online to be sure you have the latest Service Packs and
other fixes. Still, in half a day you should be up and running again. All
your installed applications and your data should be preserved You probably
will not need to reactivate at all, but if you do, it should be quick and
painless.

afew ppl have asked this, heres a copy and paste
when you turn the computer on hold the Delete button till the BIOS control
screen appears.
choose the option thats called Primary BIOS functions or something like it.
select Primary Boot Device and choose CDROM.
press Esc to return to main bios page then choose Save and Exit, which will
restart the computer.
as the computer restarts it will show Boot from cdrom, then prompt you to
boot from cdrom by pressing enter or spacebar..
this boots from the xp cd instead of your HD and will ask several questions
on what you want to do.
to reinstall windows its easiest to delete the existing partion then create
a new partition to install xp onto.
beware as this will erase all data on your hard drive.
onece xp has installed restart, enter the bios again, choose HDD-0 for the
primary boot device and save and exit
hope thats what you needed.
