View Full Version : Changing Motherboards after Windows XP installation

Hello all,
After changing motherboards (from one with an AMD
processor to one with an Intel processor,) Windows XP Home
will not start at all. The computer restarts no matter if
I choose start normally, start in safe mode, start in safe
mode with network support, etc (all choices). Whenever I
make a selection and hit the enter key, the computer just
restarts. I had to change out my motherboard again to get
things running right (of course, which I am using
now ;) ). Could someone please shed some light on this
please? I have changed out motherboards in the past with
Windows 98se without this problem.

Current: MSI K7T266 Pro2 Motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 2000+

Trying to install: DFI PS83-BL Motherboard
Intel P4 2.4 800 FSB (with Hyper-
Threading)

Thanks in advance,

Pat

Pat;
A Repair Installation is normally required to properly detect the new
hardware after a motherboard replacement:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_install.htm
Windows Updates will need to be reloaded.

This may not be possible if Windows XP is OEM.

I agree with Chris P. - install from scratch. I had an XP install from a
VIA board EP 8K5A2+ which was uprooted to an ASUS P4P800 Deluxe. A
maintenance reinstall of the OS simply did not work!

Did a clean install of XP Pro and everything is functioning great!

Len;
You both overlook that A Repair Installation is exactly that and does
very well and normally has and causes no problems.
A Repair is much more than just a quick fix, it does an excellent job
in cases such as this.
It also accomplishes in about 45 minutes + updates what may take many
hours and more to fix with a Clean Installation.

Just because it did not work for you, is not a good reason for no one
to do it.
Considering the payback, a Clean Installation is very much worth
doing, it rarely fails.

How long did the entire process take you including loading all
applications and readjusting the settings?

Hi, Pat.

You've received strongly conflicting advice, but I agree with Jupiter Jones.
Read Doug Knox's page, which Jupiter gave you, or MS official instructions
at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q315341

This won't save you time for the update of WinXP itself, but it should
preserve all or most of your installed applications, all of your data - and
even most of your "tweaks". A motherboard/CPU/chipset replacement is about
as "simple" as a heart/brain transplant; WinXP Setup basically has to
rebuild all its nerve connections.

Let us know what you do and how it works out for you. Future readers of
this thread will wonder who was right. You can do them a favor by posting
your experience. In a newsgroup, we all learn from each other.

Hello again,

Well, the repair installation seems to have worked. I wanted to try it
first before having to re-install everything again...ugh! I had to
reactivate Windows again too. The nice thing about doing it this way is
that I didn't lose any programs or data! I guess time will tell though if
I'll have any hiccups in the future. Thanks again for the responses,
