On the first pass of the upgrade Windows reported a long
list of incompatibilities of various level. Advice was to
consult the Hardware Compatibility List on the Windows
web. Could not find this. Any clue?

More generally, Report also advises to update drivers
BEFORE upgrade. Would that not render the peripherals
inoperative? How to upgrade then if the keyboard and mouse
go bonk?

There is a lot of hardware and software that will not will
NOT work with XP and there are no drivers available. But a
lot of hardware and software will work with XP.
Besides the XP upgrade advisor on the XP CD and the MS
website, there is a nice on-line scan at www.pcpitstop.com
on the left sidebar as XP Readiness Test. It takes a few
minutes to run and will give a report on both hardware and
software.
We have an older HP6465 with a 433 MHz Celeron on a ASUS
MEV-BM mobo with 440 BX chipset. It crashed the other day
and my best attempts to recover the system failed. HP
supplies a two CD set of recovery and restore disks with
this model (they don't now). I have the MS W98 update CD,
too but it isn't bootable.
I ended up formatting the C: drive (data on another
partition) and decided to try an experiment.
MS upgrade advisor and PC Pit Stop had indicated possible
problems with the BIOS and some hardware, software. So I
used my XP Pro OEM CD to install XP Pro as a test for a few
hours just to see if it would run.
It booted 60% faster than 98, ran WMP flawlessly. I never
tried to install the very old HP LaserJet Companion scanner
but I didn't expect to be able to bring it up anyway. After
testing the only thing I found that needed new drivers was
the HP Netropa keyboard and I'm sure I can find drivers for
that.
I then formatted again and used the HP restore CD to
reinstall all the crap that HP thought should be on the
computer (why it runs so slow). You can't even remove Real
Player, Disney Blast keeps returning.
I'll buy an XP Home OEM MS CD in a few days and install it.
Yes, I did violate the EULA agreement, but the result is I
will now buy a new OS. Just don't leave it on the computer
or go on-line, it is a test only and the ultimate upgrade
check.
